Veklich devices

Since patients with various diagnoses including achondroplasia, injuries, indications for shortening and lengthening of the legs and arms, height increase and correction of knock-knees and bow legs, etc. are admitted to the clinic, an individual approach is guaranteed to all patients.

The clinic uses Dr. Veklich’s patented devices that meet the needs of patients as well as the goals that doctors set for themselves.

The principle of Dr. Vitaliy Veklich and the team of Ladisten Clinic is “do no harm”.

Therefore, the method of combining a minimally-traumatic surgical procedure supplemented by the use of Veklich devices was a timely and necessary step to achieve the most positive results.

One of the most negative aspects of classic Ilizarov device was the presence of scars from spokes, as well as from the incisions made during the operation. Scars could not heal for a long time, limiting the patient’s mobility and movements.

Some people were just scared by the prospect of having multiple scars on their legs. Veklich devices finally allow one of the major problems to be solved when lengthening the limbs or correcting the legs: they eliminate the possibility of infection to get through the holes left by the spokes, as well as the cases of broken spokes that could lead to osteomyelitis, muscle contractures and pain.

Advantages of treatment using Veklich devices

  • the technology of device installation is practically bloodless
  • can bear greater weight of the patients
  • light when worn (lighter than other external fixation devices)
  • don’t have a lot of spokes which may traumatize soft tissues
  • comfortable (hemispherical shape gives the patient the opportunity to feel more comfortable while wearing, the same applies to Veklich devices of triangular shape)
  • almost don’t leave scars (2 mm dots, same as left after punctures, disappear soon after removal of the device)
  • hypoallergenic
  • can be removed from the legs quite quickly
  • no operation is required to remove Veklich devices, the procedure takes from 10 to 25 minutes depending on the type of devices

Before the operation, it is necessary to specify the type of the device to be used according to the planned medical tasks. Depending on the indications, the device can be composed of a different number of arcs and semi-rings.

The construction of Veklich devices is specified individually for each patient, with the characteristics of the diagnosis, height, proportions and age being taken into account.

The basis of the Veklich device is composed of the external supports connected to each other by rods. The main supports of the Veklich device (semi-rings, arcs) should be chosen with the volume of the limb segment at the level of the intended direction of the rods taken into account. The improvement of the apparatus followed the path of creating a small set of simple parts for multipurpose tasks in order to be able to assemble any type of device necessary for solving various medical problems.

Semi-rings. As a basis for the formation of supporting elements of various configurations, semi-rings of various diameters having connecting surfaces with a bolt hole at the ends are used.

Semi-rings can be assembled into a support using fasteners (bolt with nuts and special washers). It is possible to assemble supports of various shapes by combining semi-rings and other parts of the device. This allows you to adapt the configuration of the supports of the device to any part of the body.

Arcs. At the upper third of the femur, arches of increased stiffness are used.

Rods. In order to connect the bars, external supports and other parts, threaded and telescopic rods are provided in the device kit. Telescopic rods are designed not only for compression or distraction when connecting relatively far spaced supports, but also for connecting parts of movable assemblies when transmitting force over a considerable distance. Also rods are used as the main fastening elements for the bone instead of spokes (rod fixation).

Beams/bars. The beams are one of the supporting and connecting elements of the device. In addition, in cases of extensive soft tissue damage, the use of beams instead of additional semi-rings expands the possibility of access to the wound.

Side-and end-threaded bars. This part allows you to mount various movable assemblies, which, in particular, makes it possible to adjust the position of the beams and other supporting parts in all directions. End-threaded bars can be used to create many different types of hinged joints. Hinges can be placed both near supports and at any other level.

The use of various arrangements of this part together with supports allows to perform simultaneous or sequential elimination of various types of deformities.
